Become a Fosterer

Thinking of becoming a fosterer, by opening your home to a rescue cat, you play a vital role in giving them the time, space, and care they need while they wait for their forever family. Fostering not only changes a cat's life but also enables us to rescue more cats in desperate need.

Why Foster?

  • Make a Difference: Fostering allows us to bring more cats to the UK, especially those in urgent situations, such as cats who have been bullied or traumatised in their current environments.

  • No Long-Term Commitment: Fostering gives you the opportunity to care for a cat temporarily without the lifetime commitment of adoption.

  • Support from Clan McCat: We cover all travel and vet fees and are always on hand to provide guidance and assistance.

What Fosterers Cover

Fosterers are responsible for providing the cat with food, water, and basic upkeep. Clan McCat takes care of any travel arrangements and veterinary expenses, ensuring the cat’s welfare is fully supported.

How Fostering Works

Our fosterers can be based anywhere in the UK. Once the cat arrives, we arrange for them to be transported safely to your home via our trusted pet taxi service.

To become a fosterer:

  1. Application: Complete a foster application form and provide a video of your home for a house check.

  2. Meet & Greet: We’ll schedule a video call to meet you and introduce ourselves.

  3. Placement: Once approved, we’ll match you with a cat in need and arrange for their safe arrival.

While fostering, we continue to actively search for the cat’s forever home, so the duration of their stay with you may vary. We are always at hand if you need any advice or support.

FAQs About Fostering

1. Who can become a fosterer?
Anyone in the UK who can provide a safe and loving temporary home for a cat is welcome to apply.

2. How long will I need to foster a cat?
The duration varies depending on how quickly the cat finds a permanent home however if for any reasons your circumstances change and you can no longer foster your cat you just need to let us know as soon as possible so we can make alternative arrangements.

3. Do i need to pay a fee? What expenses will I need to cover?
We ask fosterers to provide food, water, and general upkeep. Clan McCat covers all travel and veterinary costs.

4. Can I foster if I already have pets?
Yes! Many of our fosterers have other pets. We’ll assess compatibility during the application process to ensure the arrangement is a good fit for example if a cat is good with children, cats and/or dogs.

5. What if I face challenges while fostering?
The Clan McCat team is always here to help. Whether it’s advice, support, or arranging a vet visit, we’re just a call away.

6. Can I adopt a cat I’m fostering?
Absolutely! If you feel a special bond with your foster cat,  you’re welcome to adopt them, subject to the usual adoption process. We always offer our fosterers the option to adopt their foster cats.

7. I live far, do I have to collect my foster cat?
No, we use a registered, DEFRA-certified pet taxi service to safely collect and deliver cats to their foster homes.

8. Do I need any experience to foster?
Experience with cats is helpful but not required. We’re happy to provide guidance and tips to help you care for your foster cat and we are always a message or call away if you have any questions.

9. Can I pick the cat I would like to foster?

Unfortunately, no. The cats we place in foster homes are often in urgent need of being moved from their current rescue environments due to specific circumstances, such as being bullied by other cats or experiencing trauma. Because of this, we prioritise placing cats who are most in need of immediate help. However, we always aim to match fosterers with a cat that suits their home and experience level.

By fostering, you’re giving rescue cats the second chance they deserve while helping us continue our mission of saving more lives. If you’re ready to become a fosterer, contact us here or complete our Foster Application Form.

Together, we make the impossible pawsible! 🐾
